My Computer

If anyone is wondering and if you don't care then don't read this. My computer is an HP Pavilion 540n. I have 736 MB of PC2100 RAM, a Pentium 4 processor 1.60 GHz, two hard drives one 30 GB with Ubuntu Linux installed and one 60 GB with Windows XP Pro Black installed. Onboard video is 32 MB. All in all a decent computer for everyday use, but not for gaming.

Windows XP vs Ubuntu

Windows XP is a very reliable and trust-worthy system, but is Ubuntu better?

Windows in general is very prone to viruses and if you get a virus it can really mess up your computer causing data loss and/or hardware malfunction. Ubuntu has no know viruses. For interface both systems are easy to use and finding a progrm is a cinch. Installing a program in Windows is extermely easy, unlike Ubuntu I've had many problems and troubles wtih it. File browsing is easy on both systems and Ubuntu has a very nice little tool to hide folders. (Just add a period before the text). But finding a program file is difficult in Ubuntu. (Not that it matters). For gaming Windows by far is the best because it supports many of todays best games, but I've heard rumors that Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4 work on Ubuntu. Video Editing is very easy on Windows, because the programs are easy to use. Ubuntu is impossible to edit with.

In a personal opinion I prefer Ubuntu.

BitTorrent : How They Work

A normal download works by downloading from one server. Bittorrent is where one person is uploading and the people who are downloading are helping other peoples uploads. (known as seeders or seeds). Usually torrents go faster then a regular download, because if there is 100 seeds uploading at 10 kb\s then it wil be about 5 times faster.

Torrents : Legal or Illegal?

Torrents is a variation of P2P (peer to peer) so if you use torrents to send a file to a friend or neighbor then they are perfectly legal. And Linux uses bittorrent to distribute some of their operating systems. But if you use torrents to download programs, movies, music, or games then you are breaking the law. Although there is a .00001% chance you will get caught, it still doesn't make it right.

Browser?

There are multiple web browsers to choose from. But which one is the best?

Mozilla Firefox has been around for the longest, and is very reliable. Google Chrome is relatively new and is growing fast, because of its speed and security. Opera is a nice browser but is not one of my favorites, it's a very crowded browser and slow. Safari should just stay with Mac users, in short Safari is the Internet Explorer of Mac. What's the best? You decide I prefer Firefox, but Google Chrome is very good to.

Virus Prevention Advice

To prepare for a reformat in case a virus destroys your computer, is to burn a copy of Ubuntu Linux to a CD, then boot from that to recover your data. And if you'd like, make a partition and store important data on there, and when you reformat it will only delete the operating system and not important data. If you can access your web browser then Google the virus to see if you can find a cure (there most likely will be).
Also never and I mean never turn off your anti-virus. If you do you leave yourself vulnerable to malwarem, spyware, trojans, and worms. One last tip run a virus scan at least once a week.

Windows Police Pro Virus Fix

Here's what you have to do: First if you can uninstall the Police Pro, search your hard drive for desote.exe and windows police pro and delete them. If you have an antivirus installed then right click on your hard drive and run it. (Windows Police will make .EXE files not work. After you delete all traces of it your .EXE files will not work, so you will need to download this. For Vista users this.

Virus protecion

The best way to protect your computer from viruses is with either AVG or Avast. My personal preference is Avast though. But you can use whatever you want. Also Google Malwarebytes, It's also a very good program.
